The periodontal curette is a hand-stimulated dental instrument used in dental hygiene and dentistry for root planing and scaling. It is a double-ended instrument that is expertly used to remove the plaque or calculus from above or below the gingival surface.
These periodontal curettes are considered best for dental treatment and classified into the following categories.
• Columbia Curette
• Debridement Curettes
• Furcation Curettes
• Gracey Curettes
• Lucas Surgical Curettes
These are two main categories. Universal curettes and Gracey curettes. The main difference is in their design. Universal ones are designed in a way to cater for all teeth surfaces and areas of the mouth and contain two cutting edges on the working end and are perpendicular to the lower shank. On the other hand, Gracey curette is an area-specific tool. Furthermore, their tips are bevelled for the protection of soft tissues and have only one cutting edge on the working end. The technique to use this instrument requires holding the curette like a pen and keeping the lower shank parallel to the tooth. For scaling, medium pressure is applied and for root planning, even lighter pressure is applied. The direction of the strokes could be vertical, horizontal or diagonal. It depends on the area that needs treatment.
GerDentUSA offers a wide range of periodontal curette along with multiple variations. All these dental instruments are crafted from premium-grade German surgical stainless material.
