Why Do Dentist Prefer Mouth Mirrors for Oral Cavity Visibility?

Mouth Mirrors are basic instruments used in dentistry. Without a dental mirror, it is difficult to observe oral cavity inside infections or problems

This handheld diagnostic tool is essential for your Kit. You might think there is only one use for the mirror. Some clinicians also give it as a pacifier to pediatric patients. Hence we can conclude that it is a versatile tool as well.

This is the most common tool used at the dentist's clinic. It is a handheld mirror mounted on a handle. The Dental Mouth mirror is a tool for direct and indirect vision inside the oral cavity. The mirror is small and aids in viewing obscure areas that may be difficult to view with the eye.

What Are Dental Mirrors Used For?

Dental Mirrors are used for a variety of different purposes. These include direct vision and indirect vision, also for Retraction, Indirect illumination, and transillumination.
Direct vision is for directly looking inside the oral cavity. This is to look for any anomalies or diagnostic purposes. Indirect vision comes into use with structures that cannot be seen directly. E.g., the palatal side of Maxillary incisors.

Furthermore, indirect vision is also to visualize the lingual side of mandibular incisors. If it were not for the Dental mouth mirror, the dentist might have to bend to look inside.
Besides that, anesthesia use can make the soft tissue structures slack. This might obscure the field of view for the operator while performing a procedure. Retraction is significant when a drill is in use.

The overhead LED light on the Dental chair is sometimes directed to the Mouth mirror to look at the dark areas. Then, the light is directed onto the dark areas to see them. This is direct illumination.

Transillumination light falls on the mirror to pass through the teeth. E.g., the light is made to reflect from the mirror and from between the maxillary incisors. This helps the operator to view the embrasure between the teeth. Transillumination reveals interproximal carious lesions. These lesions appear dark while transilluminating.

Furthermore, interproximal restorations may also be visualized through transilluminating. These restorations will also appear dark. Anterior teeth are thin enough to pass light through. Posterior teeth are bulky and do not let the light pass through them. An experienced Dentist may be able to use the mirror for all the different purposes.

Types of Dental Mirrors

Front surface mirrors have their reflecting face on the front surface of the mirror. The reflecting surface produces a clear image for the operator to look at. This mirror type is the most common in clinics because the image quality is good. Concave mirrors and Plane or flat surface mirrors are also used according to the dentist's need.

Mouth Mirrors’ Design:

Mouth mirrors come in a variety of different designs. The handle size may vary. Some clinicians do not use metallic handles because of the weight of the instrument. Lightweight handles are made of metal and Resin.
Others are made of metal with silicon padding. Furthermore, they do not result in musculoskeletal problems for dentists. This also makes it easy for them to grip the dental instrument for lengthy procedures.

Fulcrums for the Dental Mirror

Dentists make fulcrums to rest their fingers while doing a procedure. The mirror can be used with different fulcrums. These include Extra-oral and Intraoral Fulcrums.
An intraoral fulcrum is made inside the patient's mouth while performing a procedure. An intraoral fulcrum may be a tooth surface. With mirrors, the Intra-oral fulcrum is less commonly used.

We have developed a mirror handle with a ruler. This measures the length of the mirror inside the mouth. We are reputed manufacturers of Dental and surgical equipment.
